About the Artists

Beth Clevenstine

Beth Clevenstine integrates public participation into progressive and collaborative pieces where process is as important as final culmination.

Paul Santoleri

Paul Santoleri’s dreamlike universe arisen from the spontaneity of the gesture and from the freedom which he leaves with his unconscious to create.

About the Artwork

Since 2013, Mural Arts has partnered with artist Paul Santoleri to create a series of murals along the Manayunk Towpath. In subsequent years, Santoleri was joined by artist Beth Clevenstine. The two artists have worked together to create a succession of murals along the popular recreation trail.

The towpath sits parallel to the Schuylkill Canal, a 19th century commercial waterway which runs through Manayunk. With its industrial past now mostly a memory, the canal is now a favorite spot for joggers, bikers and birdwatchers. Sections of the towpath have been prone to graffiti, dumping, and vandalism. With this in mind, the Manayunk Development Corporation approached Mural Arts to create public art along the trail.

Now between Green Lane to just north of Fountain street, the towpath is accented with vivid works of painting, sculpture and mosaic. Clevenstine and Santoleri’s work adds animation, excitement, and color to the trail. The imagery in their work evokes the natural landscape and the life that makes its home along the river.
