“Sanchez has long been regarded as the city's unofficial poet laureate. But now the job is truly hers,” wrote the Philadelphia Inquirer after acclaimed activist Sonia Sanchez’s appointment, at the end of 2011, as the city’s very first poet laureate. The recipient of numerous awards and the former Laura Carnell Professor of English and Women’s Studies at Temple University, Sanchez is the author of several plays, children’s books, and nearly 20 collections of poetry including the American Book Award winner, Homegirls and Handgrenades. Mayor Nutter has said of her new position, “Ms. Sanchez exemplifies the role a poet can play in helping to define a city and helping its citizens discover beauty."

Join Sonia Sanchez for the kickoff of Peace is a Haiku Song, an exciting new collaboration between the Mural Arts Program and First Person Arts which explores how the poetic form of the haiku communicates personal reflections on peace and urban transformation.
At this kickoff event, Sanchez will launch a city-wide collaborative haiku (called a renga) and lead the audience in a haiku writing experience, the products of which will become part of an art installation designed by Anthony Campuzano and built by New Market Builders, displayed during the First Person Festival.
Residents, visitors, and citizens from around the world will have an opportunity to contribute haiku to the project online via a dedicated website that will go live at this event. Selected haiku will be featured in mini-murals in unexpected locations around Philadelphia and will serve as places to stop and reflect on peace and the city. The final mural will honor Sanchez and reflect as many of the individual haiku as possible.
For more information on how you can participate after the kickoff, visit muralarts.org/peace.
