muraLAB
muraLAB: To push its creative boundaries, Mural Arts has developed an experimental creativity hub called muraLAB. muraLAB is a laboratory for investigating muralism in the 21st century, as artistic media evolve, technologies emerge, the concepts of real/virtual communities merge, and the lines between public and private space dissolve. muraLAB will serve as a think-tank as we critically explore our dual role of expert in traditional community-based public art practices and leader in the conversation about muralism’s future.
muraLAB is unique, compared to other organizations seeking to combine artistic practice with 21st century technology, because of its roots in muralism. These roots include using art to give voice to marginalized populations, engaging communities in deep and meaningful ways, and exploring issues that are timely and relevant to people’s lives. Even though our projects go beyond paint on walls, we have not dropped the mural from the center our work. Muralism continues to anchor and inspire our projects, and the values inherent to the medium guide our work with communities. We are open to the many ways in which integrating technology into our work will lead to innovations, but we are most excited about the ways in which technology can help us to do the mural part of our work better.
