The Mural Arts Program and The City of Philadelphia Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual disAbility Services are pleased to invite you to the “Rise and Shine Mural Tour." These powerful murals were created as part of the Porch Light Program. The Porch Light Program uplifts public art as an expression of community resilience and a vehicle of personal and community healing by situating art and human connection at the heart of wellness throughout Philadelphia.
You might wonder why a public art organization and Philadelphia’s behavioral health system are partnering. It is because of the simple truth that participatory public art reaches individuals and communities in profound ways. The Porch Light Program murals focus specifically on mental health and substance use, as well as other issues that affect our mental health including faith and spirituality, homelessness, trauma, immigration, war and community safety and tensions. The Porch Light Program has reached individuals and communities all across Philadelphia. In the past two years alone, we have enrolled 374 program participants and worked with over 3000 community members!
Tour guests will learn how the murals are created, hear the stories of those involved, and witness their scale and depth first hand on this exciting mural trolley tour. Murals included are The North Philadelphia Beacon Project by James Burns, The Color of Your Voice by Ernel Martinez and Kier Johnston, and It Has To Be From Here… Forgotten but Unshaken by Betsy Casañas.
