About the Project 

The murals along Ridge Avenue in Strawberry Mansion were developed in collaboration with the local community and are designed to reflect the neighborhood. Artists Gabe Tiberino, Shawn Theodore, and Destiny Palmer worked with residents to learn the history of the area and create their interpretation of what was important to those who live there.

Quilt, A Pattern for Generations by Destiny Palmer 

My love for textiles came through my grandmother and great grandmother’s quilts. They were both seamstresses and I learned to sew at a really young age. Both sides of my family lived in Philadelphia, so it is wonderful to bring many aspects of my intergenerational experience into this piece. This particular mural in this particular space means a lot because people who look like me will see it on a regular basis. I don’t often get the opportunity to make work for people who look like me and I believe we deserve public art and beauty and beautification.

 

Street Knowledge by Gabe Tiberino 

One thing I wanted to get through to people’s heads is that knowledge is power. That idea is really important and simple – it gets right to the point. I grew up not too far from Strawberry Mansion and it means everything to be a part of projects like this that beautify my city.

 

Seasons by Shawn Theodore 

I used a photo of someone from the neighborhood and built around that, showing the cyclical nature of seasonal change and showcasing black beauty as a constant in that change. I love this neighborhood because it’s where I started my street photography career. So much work that’s in my catalogue and in my heart is from here. I’m not from this neighborhood, but I wanted to give back because it has given me so much.
