by: Steve Weinik

We are elated to share the news that both, Lucy + Jorge Orta’s 70 x 7 The Meal, act XXXIV and Virgil Marti’s Five Standards (Dazzle) were recognized by Public Art Network, Year in Review. There were 342 works submitted for consideration this year and only 37 were recognized. We are in such good company, as many wonderful projects have been chosen and we cannot thank PAN enough for this recognition. Last year, we celebrated our 30th-year anniversary by looking back at our history and looking forward with 70 x 7 The Meal, act XXXIV. This participatory project explored the social and experimental dimensions of art in public space. 70 x 7 The Meal, act XXXIV took Mural Arts beyond a genre-specific format and expanded upon the social and civic foundation of the mural tradition by addressing the relationship between local communities, regional ecologies, global economies, and the politics of food production.

70 x 7 The Meal, act XXXIV was a collaboration between Mural Arts and internationally renowned, Paris-based artists, Lucy + Jorge Orta. A diverse group of people gathered around a communal table to meet and discuss the politics of food production and the role heirloom foods can play in creating a healthier ecology and food system.

70 x 7 The Meal, act XXXIV, was a visual and performative work of public art, free to the 900 invited participants who gathered and dined together in the heart of Philadelphia. A sampling of heirloom produce was created by consulting chef, Marc Vetri and catered by Cescaphe Event Group.
