Celebrating Black Business Month Spotlight on Love Now Media: A Beacon of Love and Justice

August marks Black Business Month, a time to celebrate and support the contributions of Black entrepreneurs and businesses nationwide. This month-long observance offers a valuable opportunity to highlight the achievements and impact of Black businesses on our communities and economy. In honor of Black Business Month, we’re spotlighting Love Now Media, a dynamic company that exemplifies innovation and excellence within the Black business community. Love Now Media notably featured Mural Arts in its spring 2024 issue, themed “Loving Artfully,” in celebration of Mural Arts’ 40th Anniversary. This feature highlights the strong connection between our organizations and underscores Love Now Media’s role in promoting cultural and artistic achievements.

Founded by Jos Duncan Asé in 2016, Love Now Media is dedicated to enriching the media landscape by promoting narratives of love, justice, and community, focusing on stories that uplift and inspire.

Establishing Love Now Media 

The journey to establish Love Now Media began with Jos Duncan Asé’s deep-seated passion for storytelling and a desire to change the prevailing media narratives surrounding Black communities. With over a decade of experience in media production and community engagement, Jos recognized a significant gap in the media landscape: a need for stories that focus on love, resilience, and justice rather than perpetuating cycles of trauma and negativity.

In 2016, Jos founded Love Now Media with the mission to create and amplify stories that reflect the positive and transformative power of love. The organization started as a small team of dedicated storytellers and has grown into a recognized force in the media industry, known for its commitment to social justice and community empowerment.

Mission and Impact of Love Now Media 

At its core, Love Now Media is committed to reshaping how media portrays Black communities. Jos Duncan Asé, an experienced media professional, was driven by a vision to create a platform that centers stories of unity, healing, and empowerment.

“Our mission is to spotlight stories that bring people together and promote positive change,” Jos explains. “We aim to move beyond traditional narratives of trauma and instead focus on stories of love and resilience.”

Overcoming Challenges and Achieving Growth 

Starting a media enterprise centered on love and justice came with its own set of challenges. Jos faced significant hurdles in securing financial backing and convincing others of the worth of her mission. “One major challenge was ensuring financial sustainability,” she notes. “We had to develop a solid business model and seek partnerships to support our work.”

Despite these obstacles, Love Now Media has made significant strides. One of their flagship initiatives, “Love in the Face of Gun Violence,” involved training community leaders to share narratives of hope and solidarity. This project resonated deeply, drawing more attention and support than anticipated.

Advice for Aspiring Black Entrepreneurs 

Jos Duncan Asé offers insightful advice for those looking to venture into the media field or start their own businesses:

  1. Craft a Sustainable Business Model: “Having a clear plan for generating revenue is crucial. Starting with just a camera or microphone isn’t enough; you need a strategy to make your work sustainable.”
  2. Build Strategic Partnerships: “Collaborate with other organizations to access resources and opportunities. Strong partnerships can be pivotal for growth.”
  3. Prioritize Personal Well-Being: “Your ability to lead and inspire others is tied to your own health. Take care of yourself to ensure you can contribute positively to your community and work.”

Looking Ahead: Strategic Goals and Expansion 

Love Now Media is poised for exciting developments in the coming years. Jos outlines their strategic goals: “We’re expanding our team and planning to extend our work into new cities through collaborations. We want to share our love-centric approach with other media organizations and recruit key roles, including a strategic marketer, a full-time writer, and a social media expert. Our aim is to see our influence grow both nationally and globally.”

Upcoming Projects to Watch 

One of the most anticipated projects is the fall issue of Love Now Magazine, which is themed “Freedom.” The issue will feature Kristal Bush, an activist leading an initiative that advocates for the release of those still incarcerated for cannabis-related offenses. The magazine will also spotlight other activists and organizations dedicated to social justice and community support.
