56th Street Gateway Mural Dedication

The artwork at 56th Street Gateway is part of the first stage of a multi-year reimagining of the 56th Street Corridor in collaboration with the Philadelphia Housing Authority, Empowered CDC, and Bartram’s Garden. Mural Arts will dedicate a series of freestanding panels painted by Hagopian Arts entitled Wild Medicine Eco Mural 21 as well as the first three in a series of bas relief mosaic planters by Laura Lyn Stern called Life Underground. As part of the mural dedication, artist Laura Lyn Stern will lead a family friendly ceramic activity, “What Nourishes Us.” Participants will be invited to press plant life and stamps into rolled out clay, creating tiles that will be incorporated into the next planters in the series. Additionally, local West Philly herbalist, Melaney Gilchrist, and mindfulness yoga practitioner, Nakesha Moore of Breathe Moore, will be offering workshops: Gilchrist will teach participants to create their own medicine with plants featured in the mural, and Breathe Moore will lead family yoga mindfulness workshops integrating the Wild Medicine theme.
