Tanner The Thankful Poor Dedication

Celebrate the legacy of African-American art with us as we unveil a powerful new mural in Strawberry Mansion! Inspired by the iconic painting The Thankful Poor by Henry Ossawa Tanner, this mural is a tribute to dignity, resilience, and community pride. Originally debuted in Philadelphia in 1994, Tanner’s masterpiece reshaped perspectives by honoring African-American culture with grace and respect, defying stereotypes of its time.

Today, renowned Atlanta-based artist George A. Morton reimagines Tanner’s vision for Strawberry Mansion. Morton, celebrated for his Dutch Old Masters-inspired style, brings a unique depth and artistry to this project. His acclaimed journey—captured in the award-winning HBO documentary Master of Light—reflects themes of overcoming adversity, illuminating both his creative prowess and his insights into social justice and intergenerational healing.

Join us in honoring these stories of triumph and artistry as we dedicate this vibrant new mural, a lasting symbol of inspiration for all.
