The Top 7 March Moments at Mural Arts

Everyone likes a paint day – even dogs! The puppies got in on the action while their humans helped paint Welcome to the Neighborhood, a mural designed by Brad Carney and Jeffrey Kilpatrick for the Fishtown/Kensington neighborhood.

Michelle Angela Ortiz wowed us in October with Familias Separadas, her poignant multi-part work for Open Source. This month, Michelle added another beautiful, temporary piece to the collection.

Young adults in The Guild showed their work at Saxby’s, speaking movingly about their time at Mural Arts and their newfound creative skills. You can check out more of their work on April 14, as we open Shifting Perspective, the annual Restorative Justice show.

After five years, Southeast by Southeast is still going strong. Neighbors and friends gathered to celebrate the anniversary and look ahead to future programming. And if you haven’t yet joined us at Southeast by Southeast, now’s your chance! On April 16, we’re celebrating Southeast Asian New Year with cooking lessons and a community potluck.

As part of her work with Mural Arts, artist Candy Chang is talking with interesting creative folks in venues across Philadelphia. March brought Candy and poet CAConrad together to discuss the influence of ritual in the creative process, and in April, we can’t wait to hear Candy and SWOON talk about the intersection of trauma and art.

At Dorsey Recreation Center, students in our A2O program brightened up a chilly afternoon with some outdoor painting, whirling vivid colors onto the wall.

And to cap the month, it was time for a fashion shoot! Students in the Restorative Justice Youth program posed with the funky and textured glasses that their classes have created over the past few months.
