POSTPONED: Monument Lab Summer Sampler

Due to a delay in fabrication, we are rescheduling the celebration of Kara Crombie’s monument for Saturday, July 15. Members of the Monument Lab team will be at the park to solicit your ideas for the project, and to hand out our brand-new Monument Lab newspapers. Come say hello and grab a soft pretzel!

Get a glimpse of Philadelphia’s most monumental project in 2017. Join Mural Arts for a first look at Monument Lab, and tell us about your vision for Philadelphia at a pop-up version of our upcoming labs. Meet Philadelphia artist Kara Crombie, who is currently at work on Sample Philly, an interactive sculpture with a sound bank of musical loops drawn from Philadelphia’s rich musical history. Enjoy live music from DJ Royale, Girls Rock Philly, Rock to the Future, and youth band DSG; sample free summertime refreshments; and chat one-on-one with the artists and curators!

Nine weeks, 10 sites, 21 artists, and one central question: What is your vision for a monument that represents Philadelphia? Monument Lab is a public art and history project produced by Mural Arts Philadelphia and curators Paul Farber and Ken Lum that invites people to join a citywide conversation about history, memory, and our collective future.

Visit monumentlab.muralarts for more information about this expansive, interactive project, coming to Philadelphia’s Center City squares and neighborhood parks in fall 2017.

Lead Monument Lab partners include the City of Philadelphia; Office of Arts, Culture, and the Creative Economy; Historic Philadelphia; Independence National Historic Park; Penn Institute for Urban Research; Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; and the University of Pennsylvania.

Major support for Monument Lab projects staged in Philadelphia’s five squares has been provided by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage. An expanded artist roster and projects at five neighborhood sites have been made possible by a significant grant from the William Penn Foundation. Lead corporate sponsor is Bank of America. Additional support has been provided by Susanna Lachs and Dean Adler, Hummingbird Foundation, J2 Design, National Endowment for the Arts, Nick & Dee Adams Charitable Fund, Parkway Corporation, Relief Communications LLC, Tiffany Tavarez, Tuttleman Family Foundation, Joe & Renee Zuritsky, and 400+ Kickstarter backers.
