About the Project

Reading Between the Lines (RBTL) is a project developed by Mural Arts to highlight some of the core design elements – color, line, value, pattern, and typography – that are inherent in graffiti art. Through classroom, and on-site interventions with professional artists, youth learn the theory and application of these design elements.

Classroom activities yield downloadable fonts, creation of kaleidoscopes, designing jean jackets and many more fun activities. Youth also learn the cultural context of the birth, and development of graffiti.

Additionally, RBTL has yielded three new murals by Claudia “MadC” Walde, Greg Lamarche and Matt W. Moore. Each new piece will focus on design elements mentioned above. Additional programming will include collaboration with artists Lady Pink, Mags, Claw Money, Dan 1, Samuel Meyerson and Karma.
