Civic Views: The Labor of the City and Closing Reception
A conversation championing the work of public sector employees led by labor organizer Paul Prescod and Librarian Julie Zaebst. Conversation is followed by a Closing Reception for Civic Views, including a brief speaking program and performance by the Municipal Employees Choral Ensemble. This event is a part of Civic Views, a temporary public art project celebrating the city’s municipal employees and their diverse perspectives on Philadelphia through a poetic picturing of their office windows by artist Emilio MartÃnez Poppe and curated by Jameson Paige.
Paul Prescod is an organizer with Teamsters for a Democratic Union and Jacobin contributing editor. He also serves on the board of Labor Notes.
Julie Zaebst is a member of DC47, Local 2187 and an employee of the Free Library of Philadelphia. Prior to becoming a librarian, Julie was a social worker for 20 years, most recently at the ACLU of Pennsylvania where she worked to advance abortion access, LGBTQ rights and justice, and the closure of Philadelphia’s women’s jail. Julie holds masters degrees in social work and in library science. She lives in Point Breeze with her 12-year-old son and two cats, and she’s currently reading The Day the World Stops Shopping and Good Dirt.
