The Graterford Archive

Join us for Art Ignites Change, an engaging session where art and social justice intersect.

Speakers:

Jane Golden & Eduardo Ramirez
Mural Arts Philadelphia
Program Overview:

Introduction: Jane and Eduardo will introduce themselves and the Mural Arts program at SCI Graterford, active from 2002-2004.

Behind the Scenes: Hear the fascinating stories of mural projects at Graterford—how supplies were brought in, artists visited, and murals were produced on parachute cloth.

Interactive Activity: As you listen, join us in a hands-on experience where you’ll use non-permanent marker paint sticks to “paint-by-numbers” on parachute cloth. This collaborative artwork will continue during the reception, allowing everyone to contribute.

About the Graterford Archive Project: Located just 30 miles from Haverford College, the State Correctional Institution of Graterford was a significant prison in the Philadelphia region from 1929 to 2018. Now replaced by the State Correctional Institution of Phoenix, the Graterford Archive project seeks to preserve and amplify the voices of those formerly incarcerated there. Through a digital archive and educational programs, this initiative fosters a community-driven approach to understanding and dismantling mass incarceration systems, actively involving justice-impacted individuals in creating a more equitable future.

Don’t miss this opportunity to be part of a powerful conversation and creative experience that connects art with social change. We look forward to seeing you there!
