A Tribute to Frank Rizzo

A Tribute to Frank Rizzo by artist Diane Keller was located in South Philadelphia. The artist is a noted portraitist and a South Philadelphia resident. This portrait, formerly located in the heart of the Italian Market, paid tribute to Frank Rizzo (1920-1991), a police officer, Police Commissioner (1967-1971), and two-term Mayor of Philadelphia (1972-1980). In creating this mural, Keller looked at Italian Renaissance paintings and adopted the bust composition and palette used during that historical period. Keller worked from a photo chosen by Rizzo’s family members – they wanted the mural to feature his face just as it appeared in his official mayoral portrait. Behind Rizzo is a mirror image of the Italian market.
The mural was restored in 1999 and again in 2010.
Location Note: Mural is no longer on view at this location (painted out in 2020).
