Freedom Now Tour 1965
Freedom Now Tour 1965 by artist Cliff Eubanks commemorates the historic speech Martin Luther King, Jr. made at this location, the corner of 40th Street and Lancaster Avenue in West Philadelphia. On August 3, 1965, in the midst of wide-spread freedom struggles in the Northern cities, a crowd of 10,000 people gathered at the intersection of 40th and Lancaster to hear Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. hail the Civil Rights movements across the country.
A photograph by James Franklin of SCOOP USA served as the inspiration for this commemorative mural.
Location Note: View of mural obscured by adjacent construction in 2023; a new mural is in progress to reenvision the existing mural at the site of new construction at 3952-54 Lancaster Avenue.
