Doo-Wop Diner

The mural Doo-Wop Diner was painted on the building that housed The Trolley Car Diner, owned by Ken Weinstein. Sold in 2019, the diner was a 1952 vintage diner from Wilkes Barre, PA that sat adjacent to an old Philadelphia Transit Company trolley car that used to function as an ice cream shop.
The group pictured on the right is “The Tymes,” a doo-wop group formed in Philadelphia in 1956. The original group was called “The Latineers” but the group changed its name to “The Tymes” in 1960 when they signed on a new lead vocalist named George Williams. The group was successful in the U.S. and the U.K. in the ‘60s and 70s. In the U.S., their most popular song was “So Much Love,” which reached #1 on the Billboard Top 100). In the U.K. their most popular song was “Ms Grace.”
The image on the left is a 1980s photo of the doo-wop group Neighbor’s Complaint. They have been active in Philadelphia for over 30 years. Three of the five members are Navy Veterans.
Location Note: Mural no longer on view at this location (building sold in 2019).
