Building Germantown

The mural is meant to represent the history and community togetherness of the neighborhood, which came out of a process that involved multiple brainstorming meetings with residents and art-making workshops with kids.

The current day Germantown is represented in the central image. Residents fill the space conversing with one another while, on either side of the central arch, it becomes evident that the painting itself is still under construction. This is a comment on recent development efforts in the neighborhood.

To the far right and left of the painting are elements completely conceived of by local youth. Students at Germantown High School designed all the 15’’ x 15’’ panels on the left, and younger children came up with the design of the Wissahickon Bridge, trees, and animals to the right.

Location Note: Mural no longer on view at this location (lost to demolition ca. 2021-2022).
