It Takes a Village to Raise a Child

It Takes a Village to Raise a Child by artists Cesar Viveros and Gabriel Vidal is located on three interior walls of the Cook-Wissahickon School in the Wissahickon neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The mural is centered around an inscription which reads “it takes a village to raise a child.” Beneath this inscription are painted portraits of children playing and doing school work. These central thematic images are balanced on the sides by more portraits of children and recognizable figures like Serena Williams and Harriet Tubman who serve as role models with the other painted adults. These adults form a portion of the village discussed in the central image and represent important teachers who the students at the school will encounter in their life. These are the people the students will learn from and who will assist them in overcoming past mistakes.

Location Note: This mural is inside a school building, and therefore not accessible for public viewing.
