Moving Towards Greatness: W. D. Kelley Eagles Playground Murals and Mosaics

At the beginning of the year drawing workshops in art classes at the school were held to provide ideas for the final mural design. Twenty-five student drawings were chosen to be reproduced as murals on the exterior walls. Student works included self-portraits of moving, what they want to be when they grow up, and soaring birds & butterflies representing their dreams taking flight. Flowers and vines climb and stretch throughout the design. Some flowers represent blossoming of knowledge. There are also quotes by famous figures, meant to inspire students to work hard.
Portraits included in the mural (in order beginning at main entrance on 28th St, proceeding south onto Oxford Ave, west on Marston St, north onto Cecil B. Moore Ave):
o Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr
o Harriet Tubman
o Louis Armstrong
o Barack Obama

These murals were designed to complement the existing mural Reach for Reading by Cesar Viveros, created in 2005. This older mural includes large portraits of
students reading, raising their hands, and dreaming of greatness (represented by flamingos in flight & planets in outer space in background).
Since 1999, the Philadelphia Eagles (as the Philadelphia Eagles Youth Partnership from 1999-2015) has funded an annual Playground Build that includes the entire Philadelphia Eagles organization, including players, coaches, and staff members, with a Philadelphia school community to transform asphalt school yards into beautiful, imaginative and safe spaces for play and recreation. Mural Arts Philadelphia joined this partnership between the Eagles and the School District of Philadelphia in 2002. Mural Arts leads the development and production of the murals and mosaic tables that are part of these projects. Once a school is selected, Mural Arts leads an introductory pep rally at the school, as well as drawing workshops and after-school art programs with students to involve the school community in developing a theme for the project. Murals are then designed around the theme, often incorporating student drawings and artwork. The projects also include installations of play structures and a mini Eagles turf field in addition to the colorful murals and mosaic tables.
