Mummers On Parade

Mummers on Parade by Mfukufu Mtumaini-El was inspired by the many children who are involved with various Mummers’ groups in South Philadelphia. The artist worked with a group of Sharswood School students in Ms. Boyce’s art class.
The mural creates a feeling of movement and excitement through color and design and realistically represents Mummer costumes and instruments. The Philadelphia skyline is visible in the background.
Many of the figures are students from the class who wear their own parade costumes.
The artist and his assistants worked “free-hand” (i.e. not paint- by- number and not by grid) and drew the images on the parachute cloth.
This mural was completed as a Mural Arts Restorative Justice project, painted by reentry workers.
