Jibaros

Jibaros is a series of murals by artists Calo Rosa, Dan One, FBA, IMSE, Willito On Top, and ZEB located in the Fairhill neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This series of three murals is intended to connect the past with the present of the “bloque de oro” or gold block. With colors inspired by the adjacent mural, the design includes photographs of Puerto Rico’s historical memory mixed with the energy and movements of current urban art.

These murals are part of a innovative pilot project at 5th and Cambria Streets designed to engage graffiti-interested artists from the surrounding area. In collaboration with HACE, Mural Arts Philadelphia is pairing local artists and connecting them with muralists to engage them in the mural-making process from start to finish. These permanent murals in their neighborhood celebrate Latino culture, themes selected from by community stakeholders, and letter-based stylings from local artists. Emerging during Mural Arts celebration of its 40th anniversary, this project harkens back to the organizations earlier engagement with graffiti writers, where Mural Arts found ways to simultaneously work with community members while providing barrier-free training to local artists.

Location Note: Murals are located on exterior walls of several businesses at the intersection of 5th and Cambria Streets in North Philadelphia.
