Journey from South Africa

Journey from South Africa, designed by Duduzile Mahlangu and painted by Diane Pieri, is located at the East Poplar Recreation Center in the North Philadelphia neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This mural is inspired by the house painting practices of the indigenous Ndebele peoples of South Africa. This art form grew among the Ndebele in the 20th century as they sought ways to proclaim sovereignty and cultural self-expression in the face of forced removal from ancestral lands due to colonialism and apartheid in South Africa.

The mural was restored in 2022.
