Mural Arts teaching artists team up with high school teachers throughout the city through the Arts Integration program, which aims to transform educational environments. These highly collaborative, multi-year partnerships explore ways in which visual art can maximize learning in other subject areas. An additional after-school component creates a dedicated space for students to learn various art-making techniques.

After completing the STEAM-focused Youth Designed Mural in the school cafeteria, Teaching Artist Carolina Gomez aimed to transform the school’s main entryway to celebrate the school’s renovation. The mural is based on Samuel Gompers Elementary School’s pledge: “A great place to be somebody.” The mural elicits the feeling that not only is Gompers a great place to be, but, like the plants in the mural, it is also a great place for the students and the community to grow.
