Flowers for You

Flowers For You by artist James Burns is located in the Powelton Village neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Burns describes the process of creating the mural in his artist statement:

“At first, the idea of painting on this wall was hardly appealing, as it was broken up by two large windows and a door. I didn’t feel there was enough room to have presence with out creating a build-out. I thought about the nature of the business, and I thought about the mural across the street and the relationship of this new work to the other murals on Lancaster Ave.

“The idea of nature, the concept of ‘offering’ and beauty rang true in my mind. Thoughts about the gesture of giving flowers to a wife, friend, or loved one as well as memories of my own personal experiences of giving and receiving fueled this image. It is really a simple gesture, and unfortunately somewhat of a cliché on days such as Valentine’s Day. But the simple beauty of the object combined with the gesture at the right time and place can be quite pleasing.”

Location Note: The flowers that extend above the building were painted out due to unknown reasons in 2020.
