Coming to America and Making it Better

Coming to America and Making it Better by artist Eliseo Art Silva is located on the side of the Gilbert Spruance Elementary School in the Oxford Circle neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This mural which features imagery like hands covered in henna designs, a Chinese dragon, African masks, and a woman wearing a samba outfit is a visual reminder to those attending the school of the diversity of the student body. During the ribbon cutting for this mural students were asked if they or their parents were born somewhere outside the United States. Most of the students present raised their hands. This mural is a representation for them and others in the neighborhood and Philadelphia as a whole the positive impact immigrants can have and how they work to make the United States a better place.
Location Note: Mural no longer on view at this location (replaced with new mural in 2015).
