Wings of Hope

Wings of Hope by artist Alejandro Flores was located in the Norris Square neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Within the mural there are three main themes: aspirations, faith, and connectedness. The angels are the main figures: they reach behind their backs to try to touch their wings – a symbol of the community’s efforts to realize its potential and spiritual center. The watermelon was a reference to what the community can derive from nature. The string representing the connected hope of individuals in the community. The lone chair symbolized the people of Puerto Rico who are separated from their families here.
The ceramic tiles installed at the bottom of the mural were painted by neighborhood children.
Location Note: Mural no longer on view at this location (covered by adjacent construction ca. 2022).
