Under the Interstate

Under the Interstate by Joe Boruchow depicts a scene under the adjacent I-95 underpass in which hieroglyphic characters enact the quotidian and surreal, Inspired by the works of Hieronymous Bosch and Pablo Picasso, the black-and-white mural in six sections depicts scenes that reflect the esoteric beauty and drama of the surrounding neighborhood. In his artist statement, Boruchow describes his work:

“My first live/work space was in a warehouse right next to I-95, just two blocks from the mural site. I will never forget exploring and being mystified by the neighborhood and its rich variety of characters. The architecture of the interstate gave shelter and helped to create the vivid cultures that arose there. The hum of the highway and the glow of the sodium lamps that light the overpass created a surreal atmosphere. With Under the Interstate, I attempted to capture the sense of drama and to invite the viewer to enter into a strange and beautiful world.”

This project was part of South Philadelphia’s Snyder Plaza metamorphosis into Swanson Walk. In addition to new buildings and new stores, project sponsor The Goldenberg Group created a brand new art zone. Steve Powers, Joe Boruchow, Peter Ferrari, and Isaac Lin comprise the first group of megawatt artists to bring bright colors and fascinating patterns to the walls of the shopping plaza, energizing the space for neighbors and shoppers.
