Maguire Benches

These benches by artists Brad Carney and Henry Bermudez were installed at Maguire Playground (West Lehigh Avenue and North Mascher Street) in the Fairhill neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They were created after the playground underwent an extensive renovation in 2015. Mural Arts Philadelphia and the Guild of the Restorative Justice Program designed, fabricated and installed a pair of ornamental, gradated benches at the playground. The benches provide seating and enhance the aesthetics of a new performance space that was added to the playground as part of the renovations.
The artists designed the benches to reflect the surrounding neighborhood, which is predominantly Puerto Rican. They chose to make flowers the focal point of their design with colors drawn from the flag of Loiza, Puerto Rico. The benches are constructed primarily from cinderblock. The decorative tops are tiled on Hardie Board, with painted cloth side panels.
