Gimble in the Wabe

“Gimble in the Wabe” is jabberwocky (bits of nonsense) created by Lewis Carroll. “Jabberwocky” first appears in Carroll’s novel Through the Looking-Glass, the sequel to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. These poems, says Christie, tend to be very special to young children with developing minds because the words mean something different to each of them. Everyone imagines their own story and meaning behind Carroll’s admittedly nonsensical words. As Christie explains, “In creating a mural with a wide and diverse community of children in mind as its audience, I didn’t want to make a statement or dictate a message, I wanted to create something that would simply spark imagination and allow the children who spend time in that rec center to create their message, their own meaning, and connection to the image and the space itself.”
