Where Girls Grow Strong

Where Girls grow Strong by artist Michelle Angela Ortiz is located in the North Philadelphia neighborhood of Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Created in honor of the 95th anniversary of the Girl Scouts organization, this mural depicts the four stages of being a Girl Scout.

At the bottom of the mural is the Brownie stage, showing the image of young girls in a circle participating in a team building exercise. On the sides is a young girl with a mirror and a reflection of her future as a doctor. On the lower right side is an image of a young girl learning about and caring for her environment, watering plants, as a symbol of nurturing and growth.

The center image represents a junior Girl Scout reaching for her dreams. Along side of the center image are activities related to sports, travel, art, culture and social support, and interaction. Images of success and honor continue through this section of the mural.

On the upper left side is a young scout (cadet) honoring an older woman (Lifetime Achievement award). On the upper right hand side is an image of Juliette Gordon Low, the founder of the USA Girl Scouts. She honors a scout with a badge. The activities shown represent the success or sense of achievement that young women receive from participating in scouting that build self esteem.

Girls jumping over the world are featured at the very top center of the mural. This image represents the notion that a young girl’s potential is limitless and any goal she puts her mind and energies toward can be achieved. The blue depicts women in various careers, showing what their futures may hold and how their dreams can come true.

The bottom lower left adjacent wall was painted by twenty-five troops of about 450 Girl Scouts from ages 7-17. Troops went through an application process to be a part of the project consisting of fourteen painting sessions. These images represent each of the badges a scout can earn by successfully completing an activity or challenge.

The ribbon that flows throughout the mural, framing the growth and development of the central young girl reads: “We reach for the stars for they hold our dreams.”
