Peaceful Doorways

Peaceful Doorways by artist Cathleen Hughes is located inside the cafeteria of the Horace Howard Furness High School in the Pennsport neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This mural combines abstract shapes, patterns and designs with more figurative elements like flowers and birds to create archways that appear to lead out into a starry night sky. Along one wall are a series of words in different languages alluding to the multicultural nature of the school and surrounding community.

The mural was created as part of a five-year mural-making partnership between The School District of Philadelphia and the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program that ran from 2004-2009.
