Pedal Powering

Pedal Powering is one of two murals by artist Candy Coated that is part of Pedal Power, a multi-sited project designed to create awareness about Philadelphia’s Indego Bike Share program, the benefits of bike riding, and bike safety.

Located at Progress Plaza shopping center in North Philadelphia, Pedal Powering depicts bikes of many designs and styles riding together towards the sunrise into a beautiful new day. The day is full of vibrant color, and the bikes have faceted gemstone wheels of fortune in amethyst and citrine, surrounded by flourishing leaves, red hearts, and monarch butterflies. The mural emphasizes bikes as symbols of freedom, independence, progress, and forward movement. In dreams and in this colorful mural, bicycles are symbolic of the self. These vibrant images flow together, moving towards a progressive and prospering pedal-powered future.

Pedal Power also features a ground mural at 22nd and Tasker Streets, and 20 vinyl wrapped bikes designed by Mural Arts Youth. Community engagement activities complemented the projects, including screen printing workshops, mural-related paint days, and bike safety workshops.

Location Note: The mural is located on a wall near the south entrance to Progress Plaza, located on Jefferson Street just east of Broad Street.
