Philadelphia Department of Public Health Covid-19 Messaging Campaign

Mural Arts Philadelphia innovative Space Pads Project paired local artists with practical public health messaging, helping people keep their distance during the pandemic.

Partnering with the Philadelphia Department of Public Health, Space Pads could be found at public gathering places like food distribution sites to ensure everyone maintained the six foot distance recommended by medical experts.

The project included creative vinyl floor decals and posters, signs and other materials that could go in businesses, food distribution sites, and public spaces – including six Philadelphia Housing Authority sites – locations that received lots of foot traffic and needed reminders to encourage social distancing.

Mural Arts piloted this work in supermarkets and partnered with other City departments, extending the work to close to 150 locations.

This project was scaled up to with support from the Partnership for Healthy Cities, a global network of 70 cities that shifted and expanded its scope of work from preventing NCDs and injuries to immediate assistance in the urban response to COVID-19. The Partnership’s COVID-19 Response was part of the $40 million Bloomberg Philanthropies COVID-19 Global Response Initiative. By collaborating with the WHO and Resolve to Save Lives, an initiative of Vital Strategies, the Partnership’s COVID-19 Response worked hand-in-hand with the world’s leading experts on epidemic prevention.
