The Honorable Senator Roxanne Jones

Located on North Broad Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, The Honorable Senator Roxanne Jones was painted in 1997 by Bill Freeman. Roxanne Jones was the first African American woman to become a Pennsylvania state senator. She was known as a dynamic champion of the people, as a voice for the disenfranchised, a fighter for social justice and equality, a coalition builder, and history maker. The mural was restored by Peter Pagast in 2000 at the request of Jones’ family.
The quote at the bottom of the mural reads: “In our time, in our space, with God’s grace we can make a difference.”
Location Note: Mural no longer on view at this location (covered by construction in 2020).
