Philadelphia Navy Yard Peaking Plant / PIDC Fence Wrap

The PIDC fence wrap was a temporary scrim installed on the fence surrounding the peaking plant that was designed and created by Philadelphia artist Nate Harris. The work is part of an ongoing public art collaboration at the Navy Yard between PIDC and Mural Arts Philadelphia. Harris has designed multiple installations throughout the Navy Yard. This one was meant to evoke the spirit of the Navy Yard with abstract representations of its buildings and ships, bringing vibrant color to the site. Harris describes the project as: “A mural which depicts and celebrates the endless amount of industrial and maritime features in the Navy Yard. The iconography, both represented and imagined, is translated directly from structures in the surrounding area including ship masts, vents, shipping containers and architectural elements.”
The unveiling of the mural coincided with the completion of the six megawatt (6 MW) natural gas-fired peaking plant, created by Ameresco. The year-long project involved comprehensive design, engineering, and construction, anchoring one of the largest private microgrids in the United States located at the Navy Yard in Philadelphia.
