Symbolic Building of a City

Symbolic Building of a City by artist Michael Webb was located in the Center City neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This mural depicted the symbolic building of a city literally and figuratively. The construction aspect itself is depicted as a crane rising in the background and the construction workers on scaffolding in the mid-ground. Building is also seen through the community members gathering as witnesses to the development. The city is not just a series of buildings but the beginnings of a community.
The mural, which was created to commemorate the 2000 Republican National Convention, once stood on 17th Street near John F. Kennedy Boulevard. But the building on which it was painted was demolished in 2002 to make room for the 58-story Comcast Center.
Location Note: Mural no longer on view at this location (lost to demolition ca. 2002).
