Civil Rights in Education (Reenvisioning)

Civil Rights in Education by artist Eric Okdeh was located in the Point Breeze neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This mural depicts key images of the Civil Rights era dealing with the struggle for equality and equal opportunity for education. The mural depicts students today reflecting on those storied times. The quote at the top of the mural captures the theme: “Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be.” ~ Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
This mural is a reenvisioning of the Civil Rights Mural by Benita Ambrose created at the same site in 1995.
Location Note: Mural no longer on view at this location (covered by construction on adjacent lot ca. 2015).
