Wild Life of the African Continent

Wild Life of the African Continent by artist Eurhi Jones is located in the Walnut Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This mural was painted in conjunction with the Philadelphia Museum of Art after school program. 180 children created the 1000 tiles that accompany the mural on the wall. The artist originally suggested a theme of fish and birds for the children to work with. The building’s owner suggested and African theme so the final sketch was modified to include animals easily recognizable as African. Jones was happy with the final composition because she now feels the mural has more meaning to the surrounding neighborhood. Included in the mural are 22 different species of birds, 14 mammals, and 22 kinds of fish.
The mural was restored in 2008.
