Michelle Angela Ortiz’s “Labor and Love Intertwined” Mural Dedication
Join neighbors, artists, and Market workers for a vibrant evening of art, storytelling, and light at Light Up the Market, a free illumination event celebrating the immigrant workers who have contributed their labor and love to the South 9th Street Market, popularly known as the Italian Market and La Calle Nueve.
Hosted by Our Market, a community-centered public art revitalization project, the celebration will debut a powerful new 30-foot-tall mural by renowned artist Michelle Angela Ortiz. The mural is in homage to the immigrant worker who continues to shape the South 9th Street Market’s history and culture. The dedication will take place at 906 League Street, Philadelphia.
Following the mural dedication, attendees will be among the first to experience new light installations that highlight community stories throughout the Market. The evening will showcase radiating produce scales, glowing lightboxes, a moveable illuminated push cart, and a large three-wall projection designed to bring the voices, resilience, and traditions of Market workers into the public space. The installations will be on view to the public again on Sunday, November 16th, from 5-8 pm. Be part of this historic moment, where art and light converge to honor the people who keep the Market thriving. For more details visit: ourmarketproject.com
