30th & Jefferson Street Playground Mural

The 30th & Jefferson Street Playground Mural by artist David McShane was located in the Brewerytown neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The mural depicts youth playing sports (baseball, basketball) and is designed taking the adjacent baseball field and basketball court into account. The mural also incorporates a tribute to the history of baseball in the Brewerytown neighborhood: The Philadelphia Athletics (1901 to 1954), an American League team managed by Connie Mack which was a precursor to the current MLB Oakland Athletics (aka the Oakland A’s) got its start at an adjacent facility called Athletic Recreation Center. This connection is evident in the A’s on the gear worn by youth depicted in the mural.
This mural is located on the wall behind the basketball courts and baseball field at the 30th and Jefferson Street Playground. It adds color and positive energy to the playground. More than 40 volunteers came out to help paint the mural, including Coach Andre Wright and some youth leaders in the Give-and-Go Athletics program that regularly uses the park for its sports programs.
Location Note: Mural no longer on view at this location (removed and replaced by new construction in 2019).
