A Celebration of Community

A Celebration of Community by artist Jane Degenhardt-Kutzer was originally conceived as a tribute to the ethnic cuisines found in West Philadelphia. The community expressed an interest in creating a mural around the theme of the family. An older couple who had lived on the block for a long time posed for the photograph. They tended their garden with the same reverence that they cared for each other. The mural is dedicated to the man who lived in the house whose wall the mural is painted is on. He died while the mural was being painted. The artist, originally from San Francisco, was selected for her graphic, colorful style that she developed as an illustrator for children’s books.
