A Healing Home

The mural explores the relationship between health, home and nature. Together, over the course of a year, behavioral health service recipients and community members envisioned, drew and painted this set of murals installed on the ground outside the neighborhood K-8 school, as well as new glass-etched drawings of medicinal plants on the windows of the 11th Street health center building. The drawings include the tracings of medicinal plants, words of inspiration, and images that evoke feelings of home. These “home” images were created by participants who took photos of their actual home furnishings. The project was so successful at 11th Street Family Health Services, that Mural Arts continued our partnership with the agency for the following year and expanded engagement opportunities to additional service recipients and youth in the community.
