A Tribute to Dox Thrash

A Tribute to Dox Thrash designed by Calvin Jones and painted by Eric Okdeh is in recognition of Dox Thrash, an African American printmaker who invented of a printing process known as the carborundum print, which produced an incredibly rich, black image. Jones created an image that depicts both Thrash as well as the printing process he developed. The mural was dedicated in 2001 during a city-wide print festival that coincided with a solo exhibition of Thrash’s works at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The mural was lost in November, 2012, when the entire mural was painted out without permission by a third party.

Location Note: Mural no longer on view at this location (painted out in 2012).
