B.R.I.D.G.E.: Bringing Race Into Dialogue for Greater Engagement

B.R.I.D.G.E.: Bringing Race Into Dialogue for Greater Engagement, by artists Parris Stancell and David McShane, was located in the University City neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Bridge Project was created to build a dialogue to advance race relations in Philadelphia. The design was the result of two town meetings/workshops from city-wide businesses and communities that discussed race, stereotypes and prejudices. Four neighborhood sites with histories of extreme diversity or racial disharmony were selected for murals. In this mural, the two lead artist split the work, with Stancell painting all of the figures and McShane working on the background elements. Overall the mural suggests that people are more similar than they are different while reminding us that we need each other to reach harmony in life. This is achieved through hard work and discussion (the bridge).

Location Note: Mural no longer on view at this location (covered by construction 2020).
