Building America: German-American Immigration & Contributions to the New World

Building America: German-American Immigration & Contributions to the New World by artist Michael Webb is located in the Northern Liberties neighborhood of Philadelphia Pennsylvania. This mural depicts the some of the contributions and untold stories of German immigrants to the United. Painted in a series of ten images on the side of German Society of Pennsylvania City building the mural covers three centuries of German history in the US. The first level closest to the ground represents the 1700’s and focuses on agriculture, the development of the Conestoga Wagon, and and work in textile mills. The second level examines the 1800’s contributions to medicine and healing with a central image of the Hamburg America Line steamer ships that brought many immigrants to the East Coast. The final level looks at the 1900’s contributions to music, engineering and space exploration.
