Crown: Freedom

The continuation of Crown, which was a response to the summer 2020 protests supporting Black Lives Matter (BLM) and the fight to end systemic racism and inequality, is based off of The Nation Makers by Howard Pyle (East side) and The Raft of the Medusa by Theodore Gericault (West side). When artist Russell Craig and Mural Arts brought this conversation to the City’s Reconciliation Committee, one of the main takeaways was the idea to pay tribute to Black Women Activists who were instrumental in getting people registered to vote in 2020, and promoting Covid-19 safety, testing, and vaccinations. These women are featured in the design for the east side.
The west side features Black wellness and healing, led by Sudan Green, founder of Spirits Up!, a Black wellness organization which provides safe spaces for people consistently on the frontlines for Black lives and those long suffering from systemic racial traumas.
