Education is a Message: Love, Life and the Written Word by John Lewis is located in the Garden Court neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The mural is about education being a message that must be received, but also given. The symbol of a bird is repeated through the painting, at some points the bird is tossed into the air and given flight. While at other points the bird is held in the hand, as the message being received. The bird symbol shifts to a flower being given by a husband to his wife, then a lantern being given to a girl, and a book being read to a child. All showcasing the central theme of education being passed from one person to the next through many different forms.
