El Corazon del Barrio

El Corazon del Barrio by artist Joe Brenman was located in the Fairhill neighborhood of of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Before its removal this mural was across the street from the Taller Puertorriqueno Cultural Center. Taller Puertorriqueño, Inc. (Taller) is a community based cultural organization whose primary purpose is to preserve, develop and promote Puerto Rican arts and culture, grounded in the conviction that embracing one’s cultural heritage is central to community empowerment. Taller is also committed to the representation and support of other Latino cultural expressions and our common roots. The organization was founded in 1974 by Puerto Rican and Latino artists and activists in the North Kensington area of Philadelphia. In its evolution, Taller has gone from a grassroots, Puerto Rican graphic arts community center to an institution that celebrates the arts of Puerto Rico, Latin America and the Caribbean. It is an outlet for neighborhood children and youth by providing after-school activities and programming in artistic and cultural disciplines. It is the organizations role as the heart of the neighborhood that the murals title is referencing.
Location Note: Mural no longer on view at this location (painted out/replaced with new mural ca. 2019).
