Empowerment Zone

Empowerment Zone by artist Danny Torres was located in the North Philadelphia. A large globe sits in the middle of this mural radiating rays of color into a dark field of stars just visible at the corners. Below the mural sit a pair of hands holding a large book containing a quote from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: “. . . For whom I dream that one day soon they will no longer be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” This book is surrounded by young people in a garden. As they look up towards the globe, they see their potential reflected in the things they could become, depicted as symbols related to the arts, sciences and technology. At the top of the mural, there are also portraits of inspirational Black and Hispanic leaders, including: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Dr. Ramon E. Betances, Johnnie Tillmon, Julia De Burgos, and Carlos Bulosan.
